The most valuable and scarce resources for oil and gas sectors in Russia and any other country of the world are highly qualified professionals equipped with globally recognized knowledge and international experience of working in multi-cultural environment. That is why one of the strategic objectives of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas is training competitive professionals to meet the demand of the national and world labor markets.
The University has been training students since 1930, international students from foreign countries were initially enrolled in 1947. Now over 5000 international graduates are employed in 114 countries around the globe.
Presently, there are 839 international students from 57 countries оf the world inclusive of 435 CIS residents. The most representative international students‟ groups are from China and Kazakhstan.
Gubkin University has two international subsidiary branches: in Uzbekistan (Tashkent Branch) and Turkmenistan (Ashkhabad Branch) where more than 300 students are taught. The year 2000 benchmarked Gubkin University achievements in training engineers for oil and gas industry with an honorable award: the Friendship Order of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The sound international image of Gubkin University was confirmed in 2001 when the SPI of France awarded the University with its highest award – ''Gold Medal''.
Gubkin University has established partnership agreements with a number of the world leading international universities to exchange teaching techniques. Among the partners are IFP School in France, Freiberg Mining Academy and Siegen University in Germany, Stavanger University in Norway, Krakow Polytechnic University in Poland, Mining University of Leoben in Austria, China University of Petroleum (former Beijing Petroleum Institute), Ajou University in South Korea, University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Anchorage in the USA, Miskolc University, Eötvös Loránd University, and University of Pannonia,Veszprem in Hungary, and many other well established educational centers worldwide. There are many partner Universities from the former Soviet Republics.
The partnership agreements cover such areas of cooperation as publishing joint textbooks and course materials; developing joint educational and scientific projects, mobility of students, lecturers, and scientists. Under these agreements universities arrange presentations, delivery of lectures, research projects, internships and study courses.
The University faculty members are participating in international events, congresses, conferences; they are members to various international associations and professional societies. For many years Gubkin University has been a member at EUA, with 500 prominent European universities.
Gubkin University is proud that among its Doctor Honoris Causa there are 9 outstanding representatives from foreign academic communities.
Starting from 1997 Drilling training center (established within the framework of a TACIS project) has been holding 72-hour upgrading courses for drillers to certify them with IWCF and WellCAP. These courses are attended by employees from Vietnam, China, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belorussia, and Azerbaijan.
Training and Research Cenre ''Anti-Co'' is a member of the European and World Federations of Corrosion.
Gubkin University is a home of National UNIDO industrial centre called ''Centre of Clean technologies''.
Gubkin University has developed two dual Master's Degree programs in partnership with IFP School: ''Reservoir Geo-science and Engineering'' and ''Petroleum Economics and Management''.
In 2010 a new international postgraduate program ''Offshore Field Development Technology'' is to be launched in collaboration with Stavanger University, Norway. This program envisages dual MSc syllabus.
Gubkin University has concluded cooperation agreements with prominent oil and gas companies, including British Petroleum (Great Britain), ConocoPhillips, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, and Halliburton (the U.S.A.), Total and Gas de France (France), StatoilHydro (Norway), Wintershаll (Germany), Sinopec (China), PETROVIETNAM and VietSovPetro (Vietnam), MOL (Hungary), Uzbekneftegaz (Uzbekistan), Turkmengas (Turkmenistan), Belorusneft (Belorussia), Latviasgase (Latvia), Overgas (Bulgaria) Kazmunaigas and Intergas (Kazakhstan) and other companies present at the Russian oil and gas markets. According to these agreements Gubkin University students and faculty members receive grants, internships and training in their modern research centers; scientific conferences and various students events are financed, up-to-date laboratory equipment is bought.
"BP Trading Ltd" from Britain financially supported the innovative educational project, whereas ''Statoil ASA'' (since 2007 ''StatoilHydro ASA'') from Norway provided financing for educational programs of Gubkin University faculty members and scientists.
Academic contacts with international educational centers are becoming geographically wider. Lecturers from ''Total Professors' Association'' delivered a cycle of workshops for future masters. This became possible with the assistance of ''Total''. Our lecturers attended internship programs in Cambridge in Britain, Stavanger University and Trondheim University in Norway.
Gubkin University regularly hosts international conferences on various aspects of oil and gas engineering issues (e.g. Russian-Norwegian Conferences on oil recovery methods and development of Arctic petroleum resources; Russian-Chinese symposium on oil and gas geology and others.
The University administrative bodies are active in positioning Gubkin University at the international educational market, strengthening scientific, educational and cultural ties with engineering HEIs in the CIS.
Gubkin University international activities target at closer integration with the international scientific and educational environment, improving the international image and building up the international brand of a modern innovative university training world level professionals for oil and gas industries.
Gubkin University targets at expanding international contacts and cooperation as well as fostering interactive ties with international and regional organizations, universities, funds and projects.
The newly reorganized International Affairs Office shall put this program into practice in collaboration with the administrative staff and University faculty members.
