The Faculty of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics is the oldest in the University. Academician I. M. Gubkin worked here. The research and forecasts made by the faculty scholars promoted the discoveries of oil and gas in West and East Siberia, Yakutia, the European North of Russia and off-shore. The faculty has founded the school of research in oil and gas field geology and assessment of reserves, developed the theory and technology of advanced methods of geophysical prospecting. The faculty scholars have developed and introduced an advanced logging technology to control the development of oil and gas fields, as well as a system geodynamic approach of analyzing oil and gas accumula­tion processes. Fundamental research is being currently carried out in the field of geodynamics of oil/gas-bearing regions and individual forecasts of reserves.

The professors of the department are well known in the industry for their academic achievements and profound knowledge of practical work. The classrooms and laboratories are equipped with modern research and computer facilities.

Students of geophysics can specialize in the following areas: exploration geophysics, computer-based measuring systems and computer technologies.

Those eager to become geologists can choose from a variety of majors such as geophysical prospecting, oil-field geology, off-shore geology, geo-ecology and geo-cybernetics.
