The faculty cherishes and develops the traditions founded by the eminent scientists Ye. M. Kuzmak, Ya. M. Kershenbaum, A. I. Skoblo, A. G. Serdiy, V. D. Taran, G. K. Shreiber, N. I. Belokon. Ten members of the faculty are holders of the state prizes and honored scientists of the Russian Federation.

Since its early days the R&D have been aimed at raising the efficiency and reliability of the petroleum industry equipment and facilities. The faculty is working on the design of new refining machinery and equipment to improve the operation of mass-exchange apparatus, creating new materials with improved corrosion, thermal and mechanical resistance, new know-hows in equipment manufacturing and diagnostics of machines and equipment to ensure their longer efficient life, developing computer-aided design of equipment, machines and facilities. In the recent years special attention has been given to standardization and certification of oil and gas equipment, as well as safety of industrial processes and plants.
